OBD-II / CAN Interface

Four wires used to be the whole dashboard. A modern engine has a computer that already knows everything. Drop a late model motor into a classic truck and the gauges are suddenly the hard part. Speed; RPM; coolant temp; and the one nobody wants to talk about - the check engine light you no longer have anywhere to put. The BIM-01-2 plugs straight into the engine diagnostic port and hands that data to your Dakota Digital cluster. Speedometer; tachometer; engine temperature and a check engine indicator come across on most engines. Depending on what your ECM publishes you may also get intake air temp; transmission temp; ambient temp; gear position; oil pressure and boost. What you get past the first four is the ECM decision; not ours and not Dakota Digital. A stock Coyote controller and a tuned standalone will not report the same list. Works with RTX; HDX; VHX and VFD3 systems that use the black plastic control module. If your control box has the 3.5mm BIM input jack you also need adaptor harness 394193.

  • The computer already knows - it reads speed; RPM and temperature off the ECM instead of adding senders to a modern engine.
  • A check engine light again - the indicator comes across to the cluster so a stored code is not a mystery.
  • One plug at the diagnostic port - no splicing into engine harness circuits you would rather leave alone.
  • More data where the ECM allows - transmission temp; gear position; oil pressure and boost on engines that publish them.
  • Honest about the limits - Dakota Digital publishes which channels are ECM dependent instead of promising all of them.

Install Level: Beginner - plug in at the diagnostic port and run one lead to the control box

Works with Dakota Digital RTX; HDX; VHX and VFD3 systems that have a black plastic control module.
Instrument systems with an aluminum control module cannot use BIM and will not work with this interface.
Control boxes with the 3.5mm headphone jack BIM input need adaptor harness 394193; sold separately.
Speedometer; tachometer; engine temperature and check engine indicator are supported on most vehicles.
Intake air temp; transmission temp; ambient air temp; gear position; oil pressure and boost pressure are ECM dependent and are not guaranteed.

Are you doing a late model motor swap into your classic truck? Want to know when you have a Check Engine Light? Want to display engine data on your Dakota Gauge set? The BIM-01-2 OBD-II (J1850/CAN) Interface allows you to plug directly into the engine diagnostic port, extracting engine and transmission data from the vehicle's computer (ECM). The BIM-01-2 will collect and output the following information to Dakota Digital Instrument Systems

Available on most vehicles (see below):

  • Speedometer
  • Tachometer
  • Engine Temperature
  • Check Engine Indicator

Vehicle specific:

  • Intake Air Temperature
  • Transmission Temperature
  • Ambient Air Temperature
  • Gear Position
  • Oil Pressure
  • Boost Pressure

Due to the various factory and modified ECM's, additional data including (Intake Temp, Transmission Temp, Ambient Air Temp, Oil Pressure, and Gear Position) may be available, but will vary from application to application. Dakota Digital cannot guarantee the presence or accuracy of the Coolant Temp, Intake Temp, Transmission Temp, Ambient Air Temp, Oil Pressure, Boost or Gear Position displays since this is a function of the ECM and matching OEM functional sensors.

The BIM-01-2 is designed to decode the information provided by the ECM through OBD-II and supply this information to the RTX, HDX, VHX and VFD3 systems with a black plastic control module. For any BIM-compatible control boxes which contain the 3.5mm headphone jack BIM input, add part number 394193 adaptor harness.   Earlier instrument systems with an aluminum control module are not capable of BIM connectivity

Fits any engine swap that provides an OBD-II J1850 or CAN diagnostic port and is paired with a Dakota Digital RTX; HDX; VHX or VFD3 system using a black plastic control module.
Instrument systems with an aluminum control module are not BIM capable.
The generation tags cover the classic Ford; Bronco and Chevy trucks these late model swaps go into; actual compatibility is set by the engine ECM and the gauge system rather than by the cab.
